On the occasion of the US election night from November 5 to 6, 2024, we, together with EUROPE DIRECT Halle and EUROPE DIRECT Magdeburg, invited guests to a special event at the European Youth Education Center Magdeburg. About 50 predominantly young people spent an exciting night with us, during which we followed the coverage of the US presidential elections until the early morning hours.
To make the time until the first results both informative and entertaining, we had prepared a diverse program. Dr. Kolkmann from the University of Halle opened the evening with a lecture on the complex U.S. electoral system. With great expertise and enthusiasm, he explained the peculiarities of the Electoral College, the role of swing states, and provided insights into current developments. His explanations helped us better understand the dynamics of the election and sparked lively discussions.
Another highlight was the live video connection to Washington D.C. There, Doris Simon, the experienced correspondent of Deutschlandfunk, was available for an exclusive conversation. She shared her impressions directly from the political center of the USA and patiently answered our numerous questions. Her insider perspective and personal anecdotes brought the events across the Atlantic even closer and made the international dimension of the election tangible.
For variety and good spirits, an American pub quiz and typical American snacks and dishes also ensured entertainment—until the election result became clear.
