From November 17 to 22, 2024, the European Youth Education Centre (EJBM) had the honor of welcoming a special delegation: nine youth work professionals from Centre-Val de Loire, our partner region in France. Together with colleagues from Saxony-Anhalt, they engaged in an intensive exchange of ideas. The goal: learning from each other, developing new approaches, and strengthening collaboration between the regions.
Shared Topics, Different Approaches
This meeting focused on topics that are currently central to both the EJBM and youth work in the partner region: democracy education, remembrance work, and mental health. Particularly fascinating was the comparison of approaches to reaching, engaging, and motivating young people—an area where both regions could greatly benefit from each other's experiences. The discussions highlighted both differences and shared challenges in youth work.
A standout moment was the workshop on mental health led by the EJBM, a topic in which we recently coordinated a Europe-wide project. Innovative methods and best practices were shared here, providing participants with tools to apply directly in their daily work.
Networking with Regional Stakeholders
Beyond the thematic discussions, the meeting offered opportunities to network with key actors from Saxony-Anhalt. Among the conversation partners were Benjamin OLLENDORF (Kinderstärken e.V.), Pascal BEGRICH (Miteinander e.V. and Chair of the State Youth Welfare Committee of Saxony-Anhalt), and representatives of the State Agency for Civic Education Saxony-Anhalt. Special thanks go to translators Joanna Witelus, Max Schubert, and Coco Meier, who made the intensive dialogue possible.
German-French Professionals’ Dinner
The highlight of the week was the professionals’ dinner on November 20, 2024, organized by the EJBM in cooperation with GOEUROPE!, EUROPE DIRECT Magdeburg, and EUROPE DIRECT Halle. With the support of the DFJW, the State Chancellery of Saxony-Anhalt, and the region of Centre-Val de Loire, around 25 professionals from France and Saxony-Anhalt gathered to exchange ideas and develop new concepts for future youth exchange programs. A special moment was the discussion with the EJBM’s Youth Advisory Board, which contributed the perspective of the young target group.
Outlook: Joint Initiatives in 2025
A clear result of these meetings: German-French collaboration at the EJBM will move to the next level in 2025! Seven joint initiatives are planned, including three summer camps, two youth exchanges, and two programs for professionals.
We extend our heartfelt thanks to everyone who contributed to making this meeting a resounding success. It once again demonstrates how vital equal exchange is for generating fresh impulses in youth work and empowering young people across Europe.
