From 5 to 10 August 2025, the international youth exchange “Summer of Diversity: Strong Together Across Borders” took place at the European Youth Education Centre Magdeburg (EJBM). Young people from Germany, France and Bosnia and Herzegovina came together to explore the topics of diversity in Europe, intercultural coexistence, as well as children’s rights, peace and human rights.

In an open and appreciative atmosphere, participants experienced how cultural differences can enrich shared learning. Creative workshops on dance, theatre and artistic expression, as well as a wide range of group activities, made it clear that openness, respect and solidarity are key foundations for peaceful coexistence.

The youth exchange was closely aligned with the objectives of the EJBM to strengthen young people in their personal development and to raise their awareness of democratic values, human rights and social responsibility. Under the guiding theme “Summer of Diversity”, a space was created in which young people could contribute their own experiences, learn from one another and develop new perspectives on Europe and living together.

Aims, learning objectives and methods

The aim of the exchange was to promote mutual understanding, strengthen intercultural competences and show young people ways to actively engage for human rights and peaceful coexistence. Age-appropriate workshops on diversity in Europe, children’s rights and social cohesion made these topics tangible and encouraged reflection on one’s own role in society.

Methods such as daily language animation, creative and dance workshops, city rallies, cooking together and interactive group work promoted teamwork, creativity and perspective-taking. Language barriers were playfully overcome, allowing encounters and exchange to take centre stage.

Community, exchange and personal development

Group life was characterised by curiosity, openness and growing trust. Initial language barriers were quickly reduced through trilingual language animation and sensitive educational support. The young people supported one another, developed a strong sense of community and formed international friendships.

Particularly impressive were the exchanges on diversity and children’s rights, which encouraged many participants to reflect on their own experiences and possible courses of action. For some young people who were taking part in an international exchange or travelling abroad for the first time, the week became a particularly lasting learning experience.

Learning outcomes

In the final reflection sessions, the young people reflected on their experiences. Many reported that they now perceive diversity more consciously and see cultural differences as an opportunity. In addition to newly gained self-confidence, initial ideas for future international projects emerged, intended to have an impact beyond the exchange itself.

The youth exchange “Summer of Diversity: Strong Together Across Borders” demonstrated how international encounters can empower young people and contribute to openness, tolerance and engagement for human rights. It made an important contribution to promoting diversity, cohesion and European coexistence – fully in line with the educational work of the EJBM.
